Finland: Land of a Thousand Lakes

Finland is called the land of a thousand lakes, but in truth there are many, many more that that – over 180,000 lakes! In fact 1 lake for every 26 people. Not only lots of lakes but lots of forests, Finland is one of the most densely forested countries in the world. So many trees that at times it’s hard to see all those lakes through them.

One of the beautiful sights in my 30 days in Finland was this view over Lake Peilinen in Koli National Park – and this is THE spot, which you can easily reach from a hiking trail that starts near the Sokos Hotel at the top of Ukko Koli hill.

30 Days in Finland

On this trip I spent 2 weeks in Helsinki, one at the beginning and one at the end of the trip, 5 nights in Tallinn Estonia, and the rest of the time road tripping around Finland from south to north and all around those marvelous lakes, forests, and archipelagos. It’s an easy country to drive in, the people are laid back and friendly (I didn’t meet any shy Finns!) and with all that sightseeing, meeting 3 cousins in 3 different towns, meeting an Instagram friend, staying in lots of different accommodations, visiting lots of museums and doing lots of walking and hiking, I can repeat what mama said “I’ve had the real Finnish experience.”

I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine.
